Where’s the wololo?ĪoE II, the game AoE IV is meant to succeed, opens with two kings playing an intense game of chess, where each move translates to moves on a real battlefield. The time-tested rock-paper-scissors unit balance, polished visuals and high production values befitting a Microsoft-sponsored title are all present, but the presentation is disappointingly impersonal and, despite the polish, generic verging on bland. After spending a few dozen hours with the game, however, I can see why.Īge of Empires IV is a technically sound, but strangely passionless game. I found the lack of fanfare surrounding the Age of Empires IV launch, a game that is meant to succeed one of the most important, definitive real-time strategy (RTS) games ever made, surprisingly muted.
